❃ Persian hunters told of a beast that left no evidence — no bones, no belongings, no trace of the traveler who had passed that way. They called it the martichoras, literally "man-eater," and the name survived the journey into Greek as manticore. A Greek physician serving at the Persian court wrote the first full account around the fourth century BC, describing the body of a lion, a voice like a trumpet, and three rows of interlocking teeth set in jaws that spared nothing.

❃ Ancient scholars couldn't decide what to make of it. Aristotle passed the description along with a raised eyebrow, Pliny the Elder gave it a place in his natural history, and one Greek travel writer offered the most grounded theory of all — that the manticore was simply a tiger, embellished by witnesses too terrified to count its teeth accurately. Medieval Europe ignored the skeptics entirely and gave the creature an upgrade: bestiary illuminators added membranous wings, and from there it prowled its way into heraldry as a symbol of pure predatory menace.

❃ Ours takes the winged medieval form — a tawny lion's body seated upright, russet mane bristling, rust-red wings folded at rest and a pair of curved black horns sweeping back over the skull. Amber eyes and bared fangs finish a face that means it, tempered by a long dark tail that curls behind rather than threatens. Rendered for collectors who like their legends with a body count of zero surviving witnesses.
